Site History

The Swannanoa River site is located in Azalea Park in Asheville, North Carolina.  Hurricanes Francis and Jeanne in 2004 severely impacted this portion of the River.  The incised river suffered from significant bank stress and erosion including severe channel bend migrations which had been documented as high as 100 feet in two years.  Additionally, vertical channel banks resulted in high sediment inputs and presented safety concerns for the park visitors.

Restoration
Wolf Creek Engineering provided design and construction oversight for the restoration of 3,000 feet of the Swannanoa River.  In order to address both the physical and biological degradation, stream restoration for the Swannanoa River site included reconstruction of a portion of the channel and installation of in-stream structures.  Construction was performed by North State Environmental, Inc and was completed in August of 2006.
